Peel ACORN wins changes to the MARC program! #healthyhomes
Posted December 13, 2023
Peel ACORN leaders Marcia Bryan and April Johnston deputed at the city council meeting in Mississauga as the motion for the changes to the Mississauga Apartment Rental Compliance (MARC) Program was going to be discussed today. Marcia and April spoke and gave a 5 minute power packed presentation. There was a lot of support and interest from city councillors after listening to the presentation and the issues raised by ACORN members.
Last month, Peel ACORN released a report highlighting the problems tenants across the city are facing in getting repairs done. It highlighted a huge lack of awareness among tenants about how the MARC program works.
Following the deputation, the motion to improve the program was introduced by Councillor Dipika Damerla, seconded by Councillor Chris Fonseca. The motion was almost unanimously voted – 11:1.
Next up – as per the motion, while two changes will be introduced right away, some will be made next year. But to ensure that it’s done right, members will be meeting with city staff very soon.
