Ottawa ACORN members hold a Pop up #Internet4All Cafe at City Hall demanding affordable municipal broadband!

ACORN members were on the hunt for internet connection at our Pop Up #Internet4All Cafe today because with Canada’s sky high prices, we’re struggling to connect at home! But even City Hall’s free WIFI is difficult to connect to.

Ray Noyes needs the internet for his doctor’s appointments but because ODSP is not enough to cover the extremely high rates he’s been living without the internet for over two decades! Pascal Kakule and his 5 children often can’t all be online at once because the speed of the internet service they can afford is far too slow. However, they all need the internet, especially since the pandemic brought their courses online. In fact, Pascal’s daughter failed her last exam because their internet connection was too slow! So where are we supposed to go to access essential services like work, education, doctor’s appointments and buying groceries??

If telecom prices keep rising, more and more low and moderate income people will have no choice but to go to City Hall to stay connected. We need the City to step in and close the digital divide by creating a municipal broadband that offers $10-$30/month home internet to all low and moderate income people!

Awesome action today keeping up the pressure on the City and street petitioning to gather support for our municipal #Internet4All campaign!
