On Thursday August 18th, over 70 ACORN members participated in the BIG launch of our municipal election platform called the Agenda for Change (AFC)!
With the municipal election on October 24th fast approaching, Ottawa ACORN members gathered to launch their platform of issues we want to see prioritized by candidates and brainstorm how to build power in our local communities to get out the vote!
The AFC Platform is calling on candidates to support ACORN members’ campaign demands for:
1) Improving Our Democracy
2) Building Affordable Housing
3) Funding Affordable Housing
4) Protecting Affordable Housing
5) Tenant Engagement
6) Healthy Homes
7) Infrastructure & Employment
8) Internet for All
9) Community Services
10) Childcare
11) Affordable & Reliable Transit
12) Climate Change
You can read the full platform here
Special thanks to ACORN board members Bader Abu-Zahra and Norma-Jean Quibell for leading the townhall and to our speakers from the Ottawa and District Labour Council, PSAC-NCR, National Capital FreeNet, CAFES Ottawa, Ecology Ottawa and Horizon Ottawa.
So what’s next?! Leading up to the election the AFC will be organizing community events with candidates for our members, doing outreach through doorknocking, phone calls & flyering, surveying candidates to find out where they stand on the issues in our platform and sharing the results with our membership.
