Nova Scotia ACORN Protest in Halifax Highlights Rising Power Bills with Clothesline Display
Posted April 14, 2026
Nova Scotia ACORN members showed up loud and strong in Halifax this week to take on rising power bills and demand real solutions.
We had over 20 people out, with lots of folks stopping by to ask questions, sign petitions, and learn more about the fight for affordable energy. One of the biggest highlights was our “clothesline” of power bills—airing out the province’s dirty laundry. Members hung up real NSP bills, some in the hundreds and even thousands of dollars, making it impossible to ignore just how out of control things have become.
With chants like “NS Power for NS People!” and “You raise rates, we raise HELL!”, we made sure our voices were heard! Huge shoutout to ACORN leaders Darryl King and Mariah Baker for bringing the energy and keeping the crowd fired up. We also got great media coverage from CBC, CTV, and Global News, helping us take this fight even further.
At the heart of the action was what ACORN is all about: members coming together to fight back. Speakers shared the reality behind those bills—people cutting back on food, skipping medication, and doing everything they can just to keep the heat and lights on. For many of us, there’s nothing left to cut—and the bills keep going up.
But we’re not just speaking out—we’re organizing for change.
Nova Scotia ACORN members are fighting for
- Lower profits for Nova Scotia Power
- A real Energy Affordability Program that includes rebates and debt relief
- Emergency supports for people falling behind
- Energy-efficient housing that doesn’t come with rent hikes or renovictions
Every action like this builds our strength—and this one brought in new supporters ready to join the fight. When we organize together, we can win fair rates and a system that works for all of us.We’re airing it out. We’re turning up the pressure. We’re not backing down.
