Nova Scotia ACORN Members Take On NS Power at “Warm Homes, Fair Rates” Rally
Posted February 24, 2026
Snow and wind couldn’t stop Nova Scotia ACORN members from showing up fired up and ready to fight outside Nova Scotia Power headquarters on Tuesday!
At the Warm Homes, Fair Rates Rally, members and allies lined the sidewalk with chants, signs, and powerful stories, demanding an end to soaring power bills for Nova Scotians. Our message was loud and clear: energy is a necessity, not a luxury — and Nova Scotians deserve better. If you haven’t already, don’t forget to fill out ACORN’s online action here to add your support!
At the rally, Dartmouth ACORN leader Tim Allenby kicked us off by calling out Nova Scotia Power’s private monopoly, unfair rate hikes, and a system that allows the utility to earn up to 9% profit every year while families struggle to keep the lights on (Did you know in 2024 NSP’s President got a whopping 65% pay increase, for a grand total annual salary of $1.7 MILLION?! SHAME!). Members shared real stories about leaky apartments, impossible bills, and the hard choices people are forced to make between heat, food, rent, and medication.
The rally drew strong support, including speeches from Claudia Chender, Leader of the Nova Scotia NDP, and Juli Bishwokarma from the Ecology Action Centre, both standing with ACORN members and backing the call for fair, affordable energy.
ACORN is demanding that the province:
- Stop further Nova Scotia Power rate hikes
- Reduce the utility’s profit margin
- Create a permanent Energy Affordability Program that includes bill rebates, debt forgiveness, and emergency support
- Invest in energy-efficient upgrades to rental housing, with strong tenant protections against rent hikes and renovictions
After delivering our demand letter to Nova Scotia Power, ACORN members marched together to the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board, chanting all the way and making it clear: this fight is only growing.
The rally got some BIG media coverage from CBC, CTV, Global News, The Halifax Examiner, AND the Chronicle Herald! Shoutout to ACORN Peninsula Leader Darryl King for being an awesome media spokesperson for this action.
ORGANIZING WORKS! As a result of this important rally yesterday, ACORN WON a meeting with NS Power! More details to come!
ACORN members are keeping the pressure on and inviting everyone to join the next step in this fight at ACORN’s Fair Energy Forum on March 24 at 6 PM at Veith House (3115 Veith Street).
Warm homes are a right. Fair rates are possible. And when people organize — we win!
