On June 16 2025 Hamilton ACORN Mountain chapter members met with Ward 7 Councillor Esther Pauls to address long-standing safety concerns along Mohawk Road, particularly near the intersections of Upper Gage and Upper James. The meeting focused on pedestrian and cyclist safety issues and was supported by over 100 petition signatures by the community, a comprehensive report detailing community experiences, collision data, and actionable recommendations. The City’s Director of Transportation also joined the meeting virtually, allowing for a direct discussion of ACORN’s proposals and next steps.
Key recommendations presented included:
- Installation of additional crosswalks
- Implementation of Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPIs) at signalized intersections
- Addition of pedestrian countdown timers to aid safer crossings
- Consideration of red-light cameras at critical intersections
Councillor Pauls received the report positively and confirmed it would be formally reviewed by the Transportation Department. A speed study was suggested by the Director of Transportation as a next step. A follow-up on-site meeting with community members and city staff is expected after the official review/ study likely in September 2025.
Mountain ACORN looks forward to staying engaged and working with city officials and local residents to support practical steps toward improved safety on Mohawk Road.
