Kitchener Renoviction Bylaw Is One Step Closer to Reality
Posted March 30, 2026
30 ACORN members living and renting in the Waterloo Region descended on Kitchener City Hall to rally and delegate for a municipal renoviction bylaw—something members have been campaigning for since the chapter’s formation three years ago.
Thanks to their efforts and support from allies (including those on council), Kitchener is one step closer to passing a renoviction bylaw. ACORN worked with Councillor Debbie Chapman, who presented a motion to strengthen city staff’s current recommendations. If passed, this would amend the bylaw to include tenant protections such as:
- Temporary accommodations at the same rent or rent-gap payments while renovations take place.
- Moving costs covered by the landlord.
Ultimately, Chapman’s motion was deferred to the next city council meeting on April 13th, where the full council will vote on the final version of the local bylaw.
ACORN members will be there, and we need as many tenants and allies as possible to join us! Stay tuned for more details, or contact [email protected] to get involved.
