Herongate Fights Evictions and Stands Up for Affordable Housing! / Herongate se bat contre les expulsions et défend le logement abordable!

Close to 40 ACORN members and allies from labour, community groups and political parties marched to the Timbercreek main office on 2870 Cedarwood Dr in the fight for tenants’ rights and affordable housing.
The week before 105 families living in Herongate were given eviction notices from notorious slumlord/developer, Timbercreek. Tenants were given until the end of September to find new homes but where will they go when Ottawa is in the middle of an affordable housing crisis?
ACORN’s actions back in 2015/2016 clearly made an impact – there will be no winter evictions, moving allowances will be made available before tenants’ move out date, and discounted prices for moving companies will be negotiated for tenants – these are all things ACORN fought for. BUT Timbercreek still has NO PLANS to replace the affordable housing they’re demolishing to make room for luxury rentals.
Herongate is a largely working class, immigrant community and Timbercreek is working hard to make Herongate this city’s next victim of gentrification.
That is why yesterday ACORN members in Herongate, led by the elected secretary of the South Ottawa ACORN chapter, Margaret Alluker, organized a rally and march to demand from Timbercreek and the City:
- Stop the evictions
- Replace the affordable housing that’s being lost in the new development and offer it back to tenants being evicted at the same price they are currently paying
- Implement an inclusionary zoning policy to create deeply affordable housing in Ottawa

Près de 40 membres et alliés d’ACORN issus de syndicats, de groupes communautaires et de partis politiques se sont rendus au bureau principal de Timbercreek, au 2870 promenade Cedarwood, pour lutter pour les droits des locataires et le logement abordable.
La semaine précédente, 105 familles vivant à Herongate ont reçu des avis d’expulsion de Timbercreek. Les locataires ont jusqu’à la fin du mois de septembre pour trouver de nouvelles demeures, mais où iront-ils lorsqu’Ottawa est aux prises avec une crise du logement abordable?
Les actions d’ACORN prises en 2015/2016 ont clairement eu un impact – il n’y aura pas d’expulsions « hivernales », les indemnités de déménagement seront disponibles avant la date de déménagement des locataires, et des prix réduits pour les compagnies de déménagement seront négociés pour les locataires – ce sont toutes des choses pour lesquelles ACORN s’est battu. MAIS Timbercreek n’a toujours PAS DE PLANS pour remplacer les logements abordables qu’ils démolissent pour faire place à des locations de luxe.
Herongate est une communauté immigrante largement ouvrière, et Timbercreek travaille fort pour faire de Herongate la prochaine victime de la gentrification de la ville.
C’est pourquoi, hier, les membres d’ACORN dans Herongate, dirigés par Margaret Alluker, secrétaire élue du chapitre ACORN d’Ottawa-Sud, ont organisé un rassemblement et une marche pour exiger de Timbercreek et de la Ville:
- Arrêter les expulsions
- Remplacer les logements abordables perdus dans le nouveau développement et les offrir aux locataires expulsés au même prix qu’ils paient actuellement
- Mettre en œuvre une politique de zonage d’inclusion pour créer des logements profondément abordables à Ottawa
