Hamilton Spectator: ACORN wants to close the digital divide

ACORN Hamilton held a news conference in Gage Park to highlight their ongoing push to close the digital divide and make the internet more accessible and affordable for all residents of the city regardless of income.

The group conducted a survey of low-income residents from November 2021 until March 2022, collecting nearly 200 responses.

The results reveal that cost is most often cited as the reason to not have home internet, forcing them to choose locations, such as the public library, to meet their needs. Nearly all respondents say they believe the cost of home internet service is too high.

ACORN is calling on the City of Hamilton to create its own municipal broadband program; to expand free WiFi to more of the city’s parks; and to offer free WiFi on the HSR, in bus terminals, and on the future LRT.
