Today the City of Hamilton voted unanimously in support of a motion to review the city’s incentive grant programs to developers to ensure no city funds are given to renovictors.

Hamilton ACORN has been calling on the city to review it’s grant program after ACORN members were renovicted by a developer who received multiple “revitalization” grants.

ACORN started the day with a press conference in the lobby of City Hall to demand urgent action from the city and support for the motion as an important first step. Members were joined by Ward 3 Councillor Nrinder Nann who brought forward the motion and Ward 7 Councillor Esther Pauls who seconded it.

Inside the Council Chambers, downtown chair Mike Wood and East End leader Elizabeth Ellis spoke to Council about the rising issue of tenant displacement city wide. Elizabeth shared her own personal experience with being renovicted.

Hamilton ACORN will continue to fight for a full investigation into all city powers that can be used to combat renovictions in our city.
