Hamilton ACORN Mountain Action for Safer Streets

On October 22nd, ACORN members gathered at Upper Wentworth at Mohawk intersection successfully advocating for safer streets and noise reduction on Mohawk Road. Our members Marnie Schurter, Nicole Myre, Brian Smolenaars and Josie D’Amico spoke about their experience living in the neighborhood and highlighted the urgency for better regulations around speed limit enforcement and solutions for noise. They helped run the action with our Mountain members Micheal Fedchak and Bijan Shahir. The event received a fantastic public reception.

Participants collected 27 signatures for a petition calling for:

  • Speed Limit Enforcement: Strict adherence to the 50 km/h limit in residential areas.
  • Enhanced Crosswalks & Signals: More visible, well-lit crosswalks for pedestrian safety.
  • Traffic-Calming Measures: Infrastructure like speed bumps to reduce traffic speed and noise.
  • Noise Reduction Solutions: Strategies to manage noise in high-traffic areas.

The online petition can be accessed at https://shorturl.at/XRHxm
The next Mountain meeting is on November 12th at Huntington Park Recreation Centre at 6.30 PM
