Hamilton ACORN Members WIN Bad Faith Eviction Case!

After 2 YEARS of organizing and legal action, our members got a piece of justice for bad faith eviction! In a major win at divisional court, financialized landlord Kevin Moniz has been fined $100,000 for illegally stopping four long-time residents from moving back into their homes at 309 Strathearne Ave after renovations. Even though the law says tenants have the right to return at the same rent and tenants submitted their right of first refusal, Moniz rented the units to new people for more than twice the original price. ACORN leader Darlene Wesley stood up for her rights alongside her neighbours and took the case to court. Cornerstone Select Properties, the company hired to re-rent the units, was also fined $25,000. This case helps build further precedent for landlords to face REAL consequences when they displace tenants to maximize profits!
