20 Duke St Hamilton ACORN members continue fight against renoviction

Today ACORN leaders and members of 20 Duke St drove to the office of 20 DS Inc. in Oakville. Mayer Michalowicz and Leora Bernstein bought 20 Duke St in 2021. Efforts to displace the few remaining tenants escalated last summer with declining conditions in the building, unpermitted renovations and N13 eviction notices.
The two tenants left have lived there for over 20 years and cannot afford to lose their affordable homes.
All signs pointed to Mayer being in the office but he refused to come out to speak to tenants and instead sent out an employee to say he wasn’t there.
Tenants have faced long periods of no water, no heat, no mail delivery, frequent leaks and bullying from property management and contractors.
Housing is a human right but 20 DS Inc. action’s prioritize the company’s profit over the health and safety of tenants and their housing security.
As of February 2024, the landlord has filed at the Landlord and Tenant Board but no hearing is scheduled. Members have received funding from the Tenant Defence Fund to challenge the N13s. Stop renoviction at 20 Duke St!
