When Columbus Igboanusi went to visit his home country Nigeria earlier in February, he didn’t expect to be stuck overseas almost 10 months later. When COVID hit worldwide his return flight was cancelled. To make a very bad situation even worse, his bank had flagged his account and he wasn’t able to transfer funds to his landlord to pay his rent. On Sept 17th his landlord sent him an email saying he had packed up his belongings in boxes, put them in the basement and was going to rent out his unit to someone else!

Evicting a tenant without an order is illegal and Columbus had nowhere else to go, his only other option was sleeping on the street. So he reached out to ACORN, joined the Gatineau chapter as a member, and together we began to organize! Quickly we wrote a letter from the tenant union and set up an online action generating emails from other members/supporters to his landlord. A few days later a call was arranged with Columbus, his landlord and the tenant union. None of our attempts at reasoning or the potential for legal action made an impact. It was only after Columbus spoke about escalating direct actions and involving the press that he backed down and agreed to let Columbus back in his home!

On Tues, October 27th Columbus was able to return to Gatineau. Together, the tenant union met Columbus’ landlord and made sure he was able to sleep in his own bed that night.

Thank you to everyone who signed the online action and helped stop this illegal eviction!
