East York ACORN members held an action for affordable housing this Saturday (April 17th) outside 90 Eastdale Avenue.
Proposed at 90 Eastdale Avenue are new 35-storey and 7-storey residential buildings adjacent to the existing 24-storey apartment building and they are not affordable for our low-moderate income families of East York. They claim the units would be 40% family oriented – but with ZERO affordable units. Which families will live there? NOT the low & moderate income families of East York for sure. ACORN members are sick and tired of unaffordable housing displacing and gentrifying their neighbourhoods, so they’re fighting back.
Kelly Lalande, an East York ACORN leader says, “We need 20 to 30 percent of all these condos set as affordable housing. When our low-moderate income families cannot afford to live in these units, why are we building them? So many of the units in 90 Eastdale and many new apartments are empty!! Why are we pushing our existing tenants out and building unaffordable housing?”
