A group of Burnaby residents rallied at Metrotown Skytrain station to protect the neighborhood they live in.

Many who live in rental apartments near the train station face the threat of mass eviction, as the city plans to demolish homes to make way for high rises.

Kay Bedford says her apartment building and the one next to it are slated to be torn down.

“A lot of the people are scared and don’t want to get evicted. In my apartment right now, there’s about 300 people and 109 units. I think I’m the only one here because they are just scared to get evicted”.

Bedford says the area behind Metrotown is suitable for low income families.

“These apartments over here are affordable rentals. They aren’t cheap but at the current situation they are manageable. If you toss these people out of here, when they put towers here, that rent has now doubled, or sometimes tripled”.

Bedford says the rally is meant to protect the homes of low-income families by declaring a city wide stand-still of the tear-down of rental apartments.
