ACORN’s Demands at Toronto Budget 2025

Posted February 3, 2025

On January 22nd, ACORN members showed up in force at the Toronto budget 2025 hearings, making their voices loud and clear: we need a budget that prioritizes low-income and working-class Torontonians.

From Etobicoke to Scarborough and right to City Hall, ACORN packed the hearings to demand Toronto budget 2025 make bold changes that reflect the needs of our communities:

  1. Stronger enforcement for RentSafeTO to ensure safe, healthy housing conditions
  2. An emergency air conditioner subsidy for low-income residents facing extreme heat
  3. A restoration of free Wi-Fi on the TTC and the creation of a publicly-owned broadband network
  4. Affordability covenants for municipal developments to keep rents permanently low
  5. Increasing the Vacant Homes Tax to fund non-profits and land trusts in acquiring rental properties
  6. Boosting funding for the Toronto Rent Bank to support tenants in crisis
  7. Providing $300 million in capital funding for urgent tenant-facing repairs in Toronto Community Housing
  8. Redistributing 10% of the Toronto Police Budget to fund vital social programs and community services

ACORN members delivered powerful depositions, sharing personal stories and demanding action. Our message was clear: Toronto’s budget should reflect the priorities of its people, not corporate interests.
