ACORN Members Take Action to Ban Fixed Term Leases!
Posted August 29, 2025
Halifax, NS— ACORN members rallied outside Service Nova Scotia to demand an end to fixed term leases; a practice that pushes tenants out of their homes, strips them of protections, and drives up housing costs.
Tenants shared their stories, speaking out about the insecurity and stress of never knowing if they’ll be able to stay in their homes. We were also joined by Sydnee Blum from Dalhousie Legal Aid, who delivered a great speech about the harmful impacts of fixed term leases and how tenants on these leases often lose the ability to exercise their rights for fear of not having their lease renewed.
Members attempted to deliver a letter to Minister Jill Balser, requesting a meeting to discuss why Nova Scotia must end fixed term leases once and for all. Unfortunately, the Minister was not available to receive it.
But we didn’t stop there, members hit the streets to flyer and petition in the community, spreading the word about our campaign and building support for housing security in Nova Scotia.
A big thank you to Fabian Donovan and Heather Clark for leading this powerful action.
This fight is far from over. ACORN members will keep organizing until every tenant in Nova Scotia can feel safe and secure in the place they call home.
