Posted November 12, 2025

Hamilton, Ontario – On November 12th ACORN Hamilton and the Hamilton Community Legal Clinic delegated to the General Issues Committee in support of Councillor Kroetsch and Nann’s motion for the City of Hamilton to stand with renters and oppose Bill 60.

Stoney Creek co chair Hojay Byfield delegated for ACORN and shared what Bill 60 would mean for Hamilton tenants.

The motion was passed unanimously:

  • That the Mayor, on behalf of City Council, inform the Government of Ontario and all Hamilton area Progressive Conservative Members of Provincial Parliament of its opposition to changes to the Residential Tenancies Act in Bill 60 and the weakening of tenant rights including contemplated changes to “security of tenure” or a further weakening of rent control
  • That the General Issues Committee direct the City Solicitor to report back in Q1 2026 through a Closed Session Information Report to review legal options and provide advice to protect renters and challenge the provisions of Bill 60, including potential Charter protections;
  • That staff from the Housing Services Division report back to the General Issues Committee, through an Information Report and presentation, on the potential impact of Bill 60 including changes to “security of tenure” and rent control, in Q1 2026.

ACORN Hamilton will continue to organize with ACORN chapters across the province to fight Bill 60!
