ACORN Action Turns the Tide on Renovictions in Kitchener!
Posted June 18, 2025
After over a year of city staff saying “NO,” Kitchener ACORN members pressured councillors to say YES!
On Monday night, following a massive show of force from Waterloo Region ACORN members and allies, the City’s Planning and Strategic Initiatives Committee voted to move forward with a renoviction bylaw. This is a major step toward real tenant protections in Kitchener! And it happened because tenants organized.
Ahead of the vote, CTV News caught the action as dozens of ACORN members rallied outside Kitchener City Hall chanting: “Hamilton passed it, Toronto too! Kitchener what’s taking you?!” ACORN is done with waiting. Done with excuses. Done watching our neighbours get renovicted while the city drags its feet. Twenty-seven ACORN members and allies stormed the council chamber to share our lived experiences, and demanding that councillors side with tenants…
And it worked.
Despite the staff report urging council to do nothing, the committee voted YES to moving forward with a bylaw, because they couldn’t ignore the power in that room. The final vote goes to full City Council on Monday, June 23rd at 7PM— and ACORN will be there in force to make sure councillors finish the job.
Shoutout to all our allies who heeded the call to fight for tenant rights!
