500 Dawes Rd Tenants Demand a Refund of their Rent!

Posted December 18, 2025

After years of organizing at 500 Dawes Rd., tenants and ACORN members are taking their landlord (Carolyn Goodman) to the Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB)! Due to a breach of reasonable enjoyment and lack of maintenance, tenants are seeking a rent abatement (refund of their rent; of up to tens of thousands of dollars per tenant) through a T2 and T6 application. Thank you to Canadian Centre for Housing Rights’ (CCHR) lawyer, Erin Tobin who assisted us with the application process! Joined with us were Don Valley Community Legal Services (DVCLS), CCHR, and former Councillor Janet Davis.

We are taking a two-pronged approach here: through the LTB (to show tenants power amidst Bill 60, and exercise the little rights that tenants have there) and through strengthening remedial Action. Today marked a step towards progress.
