110 Ontario ACORN Members Get Organized to Fight Ford for Full Rent Control!
Posted August 27, 2024
Last night over one hundred ACORN members from across the province gathered online to plan next steps in our fight for full rent control in Ontario.
With rumors that Doug Ford is likely to call an early election, members wasted no time discussing his government’s disastrous track record on housing and issues concerning renters:
- Removed rent control on all new developments built after 2018
- Weakened inclusionary zoning laws which now limits cities’ abilities to require affordable housing in new builds
- Threatened to weaken cities’ powers to protect affordable housing from demolition
- Tried to sell off the greenbelt to his developer friends which has now lead to an RCMP investigation
- Removed development charges which fund essential services like transit, affordable housing programs etc
- Sped up the eviction process during COVID and changed the rules so tenants can be evicted without a hearing in some cases
- Made hearings at the LTB (Landlord and Tenant Board) online only
- Voted against stronger rent control measures again and again.
If an election is called early ACORN members will be ready! Save the date for September 18th when Ontario ACORN chapters organize local actions for full rent control – all buildings, no loopholes.
