Thousands show up on National Housing Day to Stop Bill 60

Posted November 22, 2025

On National Housing Day, thousands of tenants from across Toronto — including ACORN members from the GTA and beyond (Hamilton, Peel, St. Catharines) — filled the front lawn of Queen’s Park to send a clear message: Doug Ford, hands off our homes!

We started the day by marching straight to the source — the headquarters of the landlord lobby, the Federation of Rental-Housing Providers of Ontario (FRPO). ACORN members joined YSW and more than a thousand tenants who took over the streets of Toronto’s financial district, shutting it down as we marched all the way to Queen’s Park.

Doug Ford’s Bill 60 is one of the most dangerous attacks on tenant rights Ontario has seen in years. The bill speeds up evictions, slashes the time tenants have to respond or appeal an eviction, blocks tenants from raising new issues at their hearings, removes compensation around landlord’s own use evictions, makes it easier for landlords to pressure tenants into signing away their leases and hires more enforcement officers to remove families and individuals from their homes faster.

Ford calls this “balance.” But not a single measure in Bill 60 improves conditions for tenants. In reality, it’s a fast track to more homelessness and a gift to landlords lobbying Ford to protect their investment (aka our homes).

Ontario tenants aren’t just saying “no” to Bill 60 — we’re demanding real change. ACORN is calling on the government to:

  1. Commit to never bringing in fixed term leases
  2. Close rent control loopholes — that means rent control on all buildings and a ban on AGIs
  3. Strengthen rent control by bringing in vacancy control
  4. Restore in-person hearings and fix years-long wait times at the LTB for tenant applications against problem landlords
  5. Withdraw all eviction-speeding measures in Bill 60

This massive rally combined the collective power of ACORN and tenant organizations across the city – YSW Tenant Union, the Encampment Justice Coalition, FMTA, ACTO, and so many others who helped co-organize, give speeches and showed up in numbers. Together, we showed what tenant power looks like.

  1. Call PC MPPs tell them to vote NO on Bill 60
  2. Email Doug Ford, the Housing Minister, Attorney General and your MPP — flood their inbox before the vote using our online action.
  3. Pack the gallery at Queen’s Park to watch the vote in person! On Monday, November 24th meet ACORN at 9:15 AM outside the main doors of Queen’s Park (111 Wellesley St) – look for the ACORN flag!

Special thanks to Marva Brunett, Scarborough ACORN Chair & ACORN International President, for speaking at today’s rally. In her words: “Tenants are strong. ACORN is strong. All the groups here today are strong. And together, we WILL stop Bill 60, defend rent control, and win the protections every tenant in Ontario deserves.”
