CityNews: Manor Village tenants demanding property manager withdraws eviction notices

The community organization ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) and residents of Manor Village will be holding a rally on Wednesday, May 18 to demand the company who owns the property withdraw eviction notices issued to remaining tenants.
Remaining residents at Manor Village were issued N13 eviction notices on April 29, asking that they vacate their homes by August 31.
The N13 notice legally gives the tenants the right to return to their unit following renovations, but according to ACORN, the property manager, Smart Living Properties, has indicated that will not be the case and the units will instead be converted to student housing.
Since Manor Village is 70 per cent vacant at this time, ACORN is calling on the property manager to meet with tenants, withdraw the eviction notices, and renovate the units.
ACORN member and Manor Village resident Peggy Rafter, who pays $1,133 all inclusive per month for a two-bedroom townhouse, is among those who will not be able to afford to live elsewhere.
“It’s terrible, you’re not getting anything under $2,000 and then you’re paying your utilities — my utilities are paid,” Rafter told CityNews Ottawa on Tuesday, May 17.
Those taking part in the rally will meet at the intersection of Argyle Avenue and O’Connor Street at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18, before marching to the Smart Living Properties headquarters.
