⁉️ THE ISSUE

New data from CMHC shows that the share of units that are affordable for low-income households is less than 5 % in major centres, 1% in Metro Vancouver and almost 0% in Ontario cities.

Coast to coast to coast, big corporate landlords are buying all of the affordable apartment buildings on sale and then using predatory tactics to extract as much value as possible – all at the expense of the tenants! They raise rents, displace tenants through renoviction, and demoviction and no-fault evictions, and cut costs by not maintaining the buildings.

ACORN’s national research shows that tenants living in units owned by corporate landlords are more likely to live with pests, mould etc., face unfair rent increases and never get work done, especially if they are long term tenants.

ACORN has been fighting corporate landlords and has won repairs, stopped illegal rent increases, prevented evictions and more. But we need to keep the pressure on to save existing affordable housing!

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

🪧📣JOIN THE NATION-WIDE HOUSING DAY OF ACTION TO END APARTMENT SALES TO PREDATORY LANDLORDS ON 25th JULY, Tuesday

ACORN is demanding that the federal government ends apartment sales to predatory landlords by setting up an acquisition fund and right of first refusal. This will ensure that land-trusts, co-ops, tenants, and nonprofits can afford to buy affordable market rental buildings and get the first opportunity to do so, instead of predatory landlords.

📝 MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD BY FILLING OUT A QUICK FORM!

As we continue to fight for affordable and healthy homes, ACORN is putting together a formal submission for the National Housing Council’s Review Panel. Now is the time to put additional pressure on the federal government to protect tenants, NOT landlords!

As a result of ACORN and efforts by allies, the National Housing Council (advisory body to the Federal Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion) has set up its FIRST EVER review panel on the financialization of purpose-built rental housing.

To make sure that the long list of issues with corporate landlords and ACORN’s demands are included in the  Review Panel’s analysis and recommendations to the Housing Minister, it is IMPORTANT that tenants directly share their problems and the needed solutions.
