We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of ACORN member, Mavis Finnamore.
Mavis was fearless and dedicated. Joining ACORN to fight her own Herongate demoviction was just the beginning of her fight to build power for low and moderate income people.
She was a true leader, who was willing to step up at a moment’s notice, while making the leadership development of others her top priority.
She was constantly looking for ways to recognize and praise new and up & coming members. She once bought nearly two dozen ACORN toques along with hand written cards to send to other members. And every convention she hosted a “hospitality suite” for members to meet and connect after long days of workshops.
It’s really difficult for a lot of people to hold their own when meeting face to face with their landlord or elected official, but not Mavis- she grew to be a force to be reckoned with. She was firm and unwavering, and absolutely vital to the progress Ottawa ACORN has made in Herongate and across the city.
We will honour Mavis’ memory by committing to forever continuing the work she did while she was here with us. (Starting with, as Mavis would want, Alta Vista Ward).
Mavis’ family welcomes everyone to attend a Celebration of Life in Mavis’ honour on Thurs, Dec 2nd from 7-9pm at Racie, Robert & Gauthier Funeral Home, located at 180 Montreal Road.
Rest in power, Mavis. ❤
