Affordable housing is disappearing in Burnaby.

The primary target for rezoning is current low income housing in the downtown core. By rubber stamping approval for rezoning City Hall is adding incentive to developers to replace the current low rise and low income housing with expensive high rise condos.

A member of national low income housing advocacy group ACORN Michel Blais  says that the fault lies with all three levels of government and 3000 units could be at risk.

“All three levels of government are jointly responsible to make sure that human rights are upheld and that human rights abuses don’t happen. And with 3000 units in the area of the Burnaby downtown plan that will come under risk because it becomes very attractive to tear these down and put up high rise towers if you can get the land rezoned for high rise.”

Seniors, people suffering from mental illness, and those unable to work are the members of society who could be left homeless.
