Cockroaches don’t pay rent!
Posted October 22, 2026
ACORN and supporters rallied outside 100 Queen St. N in Kitchener to call out Homestead over years of chronic cockroach and pest problems affecting tenants.
With tenant speak-outs, chants, and a strong show of support, ACORN members made it clear: tenants deserve safe, healthy, properly maintained homes and landlords must be held accountable!
Tenants should not have to live with ongoing pest infestations, neglected repairs, and unsafe living conditions while paying rent for a home where they deserve to feel safe. These issues affect more than just the people currently living in the building. Former tenants have also dealt with these same problems, highlighting a pattern of neglect and the need for landlords to be held accountable for failing to properly maintain their properties and provide safe, healthy homes for all tenants.
Tenants Are Organizing and Fighting Back
The Cockroaches Don’t Pay Rent rally was about more than pest problems. It was about standing together and demanding that landlords respect tenants’ rights and their responsibility to maintain safe, livable homes.
Landlords must be held accountable for neglected repairs, unsafe living conditions. Tenants should not have to fight alone to get the basic housing conditions they pay for.
As a member-led tenant organization, ACORN is standing with tenants across Waterloo Region to take on bad landlords, build tenant power, and demand better housing conditions.
A big shout out to Ken Vogelpohl for leading the rally and thank you to everyone who came out on Saturday to support the tenants at 100 Queen St. N. Every person who showed up helped bring attention to the conditions tenants are facing and showed residents that they are not alone in this fight.

Together, we can organize for change!
