Scarborough ACORN Members tell MPP David Smith and Doug Ford that we Need Real Rent Control in Ontario!

ACORN members in Scarborough gathered to demand that Scarborough Centre MPP David Smith stand up to Premier Doug Ford and fight for real rent control in the province! 11 ACORN members delivered a letter to his office demanding he fight for a ban on above-guideline increases, a cap on vacant units, and applying this improved rent control system to all buildings, including ones built after 2018!

Tenants came together because they’re tired of dealing with unfair rent increases and landlords trying to push them out of their homes to make way for new tenants, and to send a message that the provincial government has to care about making sure that tenants have secure and affordable housing! As landlords are getting rich off of ridiculous jumps in rent, tenants are fighting back to protect affordable housing!

Unfortunately, Smith wasn’t in his office, and no staff were present, despite an open sign on the front door. While Smith can try to hide from us, we made sure he can’t ignore us by leaving copies of our demands in his mailbox and taping them to the office door! As ACORN leader Khadijah al-Maqdisy wrote on one of the copies, serving the people is Smith’s job! If he won’t listen to us, is he really working for us?

Tenants in Scarborough and across the city are coming together to fight for an affordable city, and we won’t let our representatives ignore us as we fight for change!
