NB ACORN Response to the NB Power Review: Ensuring Energy Affordability for Low-Income Households

Posted March 30, 2026 | Resource Type: Climate Justice Other

We were pleased to present directly to the NB Power Review Panel last summer and are encouraged that they recognize energy poverty as an escalating crisis that can no longer be ignored. While we welcome their recommendations to ease the burden on low- to moderate-income ratepayers, we know that solving this crisis requires far more than energy-efficient lightbulbs or a blanket 10% rebate.

For too long, the government has ignored the desperate reality faced by low-income renters who must choose between keeping the lights on and putting food on the table. We cannot wait for further studies. We call on the province to move immediately to create a permanent, income-based rebate program—modeled after Ontario’s OESP—to ensure everyone has a right to electricity in this province.

The current 10% rebate provided to all NB Power customers is an inefficient use of public funds. This blanket relief fails to address the specific needs of those living in energy poverty. The province must pivot these millions toward targeted, direct support for low-income consumers who spend a disproportionate amount of their income on energy. It is time for the government to step up, take responsibility for energy affordability, and fund a program that protects the people most at risk of disconnection.
