Hamilton ACORN Mountain Chapter Advances Mohawk Road Safety Campaign
Posted January 20, 2026
Since reorganizing in late 2024, Hamilton ACORN Mountain Chapter has been organizing around long-standing safety concerns on Mohawk Road, based on experiences shared by our members across the Mountain, including seniors, people with disabilities, cyclists, and transit users.
In June 2025, ACORN members met with Ward 7 Councillor Esther Pauls to present a community safety report supported by over 100 petition signatures. The report brought together collision data, resident testimonies, and practical, community-identified recommendations to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety on Mohawk Road. The City’s Director of Transportation joined the meeting virtually, and Councillor Pauls committed to continued engagement, including an on-site meeting.
The on-site meeting took place in September 2025 at Mohawk Road and Upper Wentworth, beginning at the Sackville Hill Seniors’ Centre. ACORN members met with Councillor Pauls and senior staff from the City’s Traffic and Transportation division, where members shared observations and findings from a safety walk they had conducted in advance of the meeting along Mohawk Road between Upper Wentworth and Upper Wellington. These observations highlighted unsafe crossings, high vehicle speeds, and the lack of traffic-calming measures along this busy corridor, and were presented alongside clear recommendations for improvement.
Tragically, weeks later, a crossing guard was killed at this very intersection. In response, ACORN released a public statement expressing condolences and reiterating the urgency and importance of the campaign to prevent further loss of life.
In December 2025, the City’s Traffic and Transportation Department attended a Hamilton ACORN Mountain Chapter meeting to discuss the City’s approach to road safety on the Mountain and across the city. City staff committed to follow-up discussions and to addressing several of ACORN’s recommendations in early spring.
Hamilton ACORN Mountain Chapter remains committed to pushing for concrete, preventative safety measures so Mohawk Road is safe for everyone who uses it.
