Waterloo Moves Ahead with Renoviction Bylaw Despite Staff Opposition

Posted January 19, 2026

After years of tireless organizing by Waterloo Region ACORN members, the City of Waterloo has officially passed a bylaw to protect tenants from renovictions!

THANK YOU to all the members, leaders, allies and supporters on council who made this win possible, especially those members who came out in the bitter cold to rally and delegate at the council meeting.

It’s no easy feat to convince council to vote against staff recommendations. In this case, their recommendation was to do nothing, leaving tenants vulnerable to predatory landlords looking to flip affordable units into luxury housings with no protections. But that’s not what happened. Instead, Waterloo council listened to the people. This victory is proof that yet again, organizing gets results!

Special thanks to Chair, Co-Chair and Secretary, Jacquie Wells, Ken Vogelpohl, and Elliot Wand, as well as Ryan Murdock and Linda Vos for their leadership on this campaign.

All eyes are now on Kitchener to follow Waterloo’s lead!

Stay tuned on next steps and press from CBC, CTV, the Record and others.
