UPDATE: Planning & Housing Committee passed the anti-renoviction bylaw!

Planning & Housing Committee passed the anti-renoviction bylaw!

11 ACORN members showed up at the Planning and Housing Committee Meeting where we made deputations about the importance of passing this bylaw against renovictions! We let them know that predatory landlords and bad actors are constantly exploiting the usage of N13s (notice of eviction due to renovations) in order to make major profits! This was passed unanimously with amendments (suggested by Don Valley Community Legal Services) to delete the exemption where an Owner or Operator may conduct repairs or renovations on a Tenant’s Rental Unit without a license where the repairs or renovations are required to address an emergency health and safety issue (which landlords can also nefariously exploit!) This was not in the Hamilton bylaw, and shouldn’t be included in the Toronto bylaw. Today was a MAJOR step forward, but we still need to pass it in Council! Stay tuned.
