Hamilton Mountain ACORN Chapter
Posted October 10, 2024
On October 9th, we gathered at the Huntington Park Rec Centre for the re-organizing of the Hamilton Mountain Chapter of ACORN. Our leaders emphasized the urgency of our mission and highlighted our past successes and explained our recent organizing drive, which identified critical issues affecting our neighborhoods. Key concerns include:
- Rent control and affordable housing
- Eviction support
- Improved public transit
- Traffic and noise control, particularly on Mohawk Road
A member from the Stoney Creek chapter facilitated the election proces and new members were elected for key leadership positions:
- Chairperson: Michael Fedchak
- Co-Chairperson: Nicole Myre
- Secretary: Marnie Schurter
Campaign Demands and Upcoming Actions
The first mountain campaign action takes place on October 22nd. We’ll be petitioning for:
- Speed Reduction Measures on Mohawk Rd
- Enhanced Crosswalks & Pedestrian Signals
- Traffic-Calming Infrastructure
- Noise Barriers & Enforcement
Additionally, the mountain chapter is organized to address tenant rights, push for a vacancy tax, advocate for free public transit, and improve access to food banks on the mountain.
We’re excited to have a new ACORN chapter and are eager to work on pressing local and provincial issues. Next chapter meeting is on November 12th at 6:30 PM to continue our efforts and refine our campaigns.
