Canadians are struggling to get by during the worsening affordability crisis, while Canada’s major grocery chains are recording record profits. In fact, the profits earned by grocery chains are now twice what they were before the pandemic.

Fast Facts:

  • According to Food Bank Canada’s 2023 Hunger Count, there were 2 million food bank visits in Canada in 2023, up 78.5% since March 2019.
  • Food retail profits have doubled since the start of COVID, according to economist Jim Stanford.
  • To counter this food inflation, Canadians are buying lower quality and quantity of food items.
  • With more than 2,500 locations, Loblaw alone has more than 20 grocery and food brands under its banner.

ACORN Canada is calling on the Federal Government to:

  • Tax excessive profits made by grocery chains.
  • Place a cap on the price of essential food items, as has been done in several European countries.
