New Brunswick Rent Control is back! On January 30th, ACORN hosted events in Moncton and Fredericton, celebrating the return of the 3% rent cap for all occupied apartments in New Brunswick. The cap officially takes effect on February 1st, offering a much-needed reprieve for renters who’ve been hit hard by skyrocketing rents. While the implementation of the rent cap is a significant victory, ACORN is remaining vigilant. In Moncton, ACORN Co-Chair Peter Jongeneelen led the rally, joined by fellow members and even his son, who was visiting from out of town.

However, ACORN knows that whenever tenant protections are strengthened, landlords may try to find ways to circumvent the rules. The 3% rent cap could drive some landlords to use predatory tactics, such as renovicting tenants in order to raise rents above the cap. That’s why ACORN is calling on the Holt Government to “Do Rent Control Right” by closing any loopholes that could allow landlords to evade the rent cap. For 20 years, ACORN has been a leading force in tenant organizing across Canada, and now more than ever, it’s crucial that the government steps up to ensure the rent cap works as intended, protecting tenants from exploitation.
