\n\tUpdated January 13, 2022<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n \n\tJob Summary:<\/strong><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n \n\tACORN Canada, the nationwide community union of low-to-moderate income people, is expanding our organizing in Ottawa & Gatineau and is hiring full time organizers. \n\tWe are a tenants\u2019 union. We are a disability action union. We are a worker\u2019s union. We are a consumer’s union. We are whatever our members are. Our members pay dues so that the organization can be sustainable and not dependent on outside funding from government and corporations. Each dues member has a vote, and only members speak for the organization. Our members get elected to our board of directors and set our policy and help determine the tactics.<\/span><\/p>\n \n\tJob description:<\/strong><\/u> \n\tThe on the job training provided allows someone to learn all the fundamentals of how to be a community organizer. This includes effective outreach, strategic research, campaign planning, communications, organizing events and actions, getting press to cover our actions and campaigns, and internal fundraising. <\/span><\/p>\n \n\tThe successful applicant will be joining an exciting staff team at the Ottawa & Gatineau ACORN office. <\/span><\/p>\n \n\tThe current priorities laid out by ACORN\u2019s citywide leadership are:<\/span><\/p>\n \n\t– Housing:<\/span><\/p>\n \n\t– Anti-Displacement campaign fighting back against renovictions\/demovictions \n\t– Internet for All: <\/span><\/p>\n \n\t– $10\/month internet for ALL low income people across Canada \n\t \n\t\u25cf Building\/expanding neighbourhood groups by being directly in the communities we\u2019re organizing \n\t\u25cf No paid experience required; professional organizer training provided

\n\tThey do direct outreach, listen to community residents\u2019 concerns, and connect what they want to see changed to effective mass-based action. Organizing protests, developing campaigns, coordinating communications and research, and most important building powerful local groups all across the National Capital Region!

\n\tWhat is ACORN?<\/strong><\/u>
\n\t
\n\tACORN is a multi-issue, mass based union of low-to-moderate income people. ACORN\u2019s purpose is to give low-to-moderate income people the power needed to have their voices effectively heard at the highest levels in the country. ACORN is able to be both a local-based union winning local campaigns, as well as a large-scale organization combining forces to fight national corporations and governments that are at the root of most of our problems.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThe job of an ACORN organizer is to build formal groups of low-to-moderate income people so they can disrupt and change the systems that negatively impact their community. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t– Landlord Licensing for healthy homes <\/span><\/p>\n
\n\t– Municipal broadband program <\/span><\/p>\n
\n\tResponsibilities and Duties<\/strong><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n
\n\t\u25cf Work with existing ACORN members and cultivating new leaders to expand both our neighbourhood and municipal campaigns.
\n\t\u25cf Work with our Head Organizer on a day to day basis to learn the basics of ACORN\u2019s organizing methods and techniques.
\n\t\u25cf 42.5 hours per week – working in afternoons and evenings between 12-9pm
\n\t\u25cf Fundraising and asking for money is a fundamental part of an organizer\u2019s job. We are structured like a union: ACORN members pay membership dues. While this is not the entire job, it\u2019s fundamental that organizers sign up members and can ask for dues and donations.
\n\t\u25cf Willing and able to travel to training, and staff meetings (some outside of Canada). Usually 3 times a year. **COVID has drastically changed our travel***
\n\t\u25cf Dealing with multiple tasks in the same day – flexibility and resilience are keys to success.
\n\t\u25cf Representing the organization in the neighbourhoods, as well as with our leadership at external meetings or events (allies or targets).
\n\t
\n\tQualifications and Skills<\/strong><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n
\n\t\u25cf Have strong social and people skills.
\n\t\u25cf Bilingual in English\/French is not required but considered an asset.
\n\t\u25cf This is a permanent position – expectation is that candidates can make at least a one year commitment at full time hours
\n\t\u25cf Be self driven and the ability to work both independently but also follow direction.
\n\t\u25cf Ability to listen in order to identify issues that are affecting our people. <\/span><\/p>\n\n
