{"id":5135,"date":"2021-09-24T11:31:31","date_gmt":"2021-09-24T15:31:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/acorncanada.org\/nova-scotia-advocate-media-release-acorn-rallying-keep-rent-cap\/"},"modified":"2021-09-24T11:31:31","modified_gmt":"2021-09-24T15:31:31","slug":"nova-scotia-advocate-media-release-acorn-rallying-keep-rent-cap","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/acorncanada.org\/news\/nova-scotia-advocate-media-release-acorn-rallying-keep-rent-cap\/","title":{"rendered":"Nova Scotia Advocate: Media release: ACORN rallying to keep the rent cap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rtejustify\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><em>Posted September 24, 2021<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><strong>Tenants and allied community members are gathering in front of the NS Legislature in an all-day occupation to demand permanent rent control and immediate action on the housing crisis.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><strong>(Halifax, NS)<\/strong> &nbsp;Since our new government has made it clear that they are not interested in protecting tenants from unreasonable rent increases past the state of emergency, the ACORN Tenant Union is rallying to demand the government enact permanent rent control.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><strong>WHAT: Keep the Rent Cap!<br \/>\n\tWHEN: Thursday, September 23rd from 10am \u2013 ALL DAY<br \/>\n\tWHERE: Nova Scotia Legislature \u2013 1726 Hollis St. Halifax, NS<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\">Since the temporary rent cap was put in place, ACORN has been hearing stories and receiving rent increases from tenants whose landlords intend to raise rents after the cap lifts. \u201cWhat we\u2019re seeing is rent increases where the landlord says \u2018Your rent is going up by the legal 2%, unless the state of emergency lifts in which case it will go up $100-$1000,\u201d says Halifax-Peninsula Chair Hannah Wood. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen rent increases like these for as much as $2000.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\">Even though these rent increases are illegal, they have become common since the government made it clear they don\u2019t intend to prosecute landlords who violate the 2% rent cap.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\">Marjike Grijm, Chair of the Dartmouth chapter of ACORN, writes: \u201cThis isn\u2019t just an issue with the downtown core, people are even getting priced out of traditionally affordable neighbourhoods like Highfield, where a one bedroom apartment can go for as much as $1200 these days.\u201d She disputes claims that the housing crisis was caused by the pandemic, \u201cWe were in a crisis before COVID. Cost of living keeps skyrocketing, rents are skyrocketing, but our wages stay the same. Developments that go up in this city aren\u2019t affordable units, and landlords bring up the rent knowing full well that tenants have no other option but to pay.
