Today, ACORN members are celebrating a significant victory in the fight for tenant protections against mass displacement. After years of community organizing, rallies, and unwavering dedication, ACORN successfully pressured Councillors of the Housing and Planning Committee to vote in favour of moving forward with the development of an anti-renoviction bylaw.

This win comes after years of tireless effort from ACORN members across Ottawa. From consistent rallies and direct meetings with councillors to a large rally in front of City Hall just yesterday, the momentum has been building. In today’s committee meeting, 12 ACORN members spoke directly to the committee, making a powerful case for the bylaw, including Eddy Roue, Sara Laviolette, Nelda Giroux, Pierre Girard, Debbie Staples, Paul Burns, Dave Longchamps, Sharon Katz, Alex McDonald, Mathew Milne, Dustin Munro, and Patrick LaPlante.

Thank you to Councillor Ariel Troster for championing this issue on council, moving the motion today, and standing up for tenants’ right to housing!

Many of ACORN’s allies also spoke out in support, including groups like the Advocacy Centre for Tenants Ontario (ACTO), Community Legal Services Ottawa (CLSO), Robin Browne from 613 819 Black Hub, Carleton University Student Association, and Alliance to End Homelessness. A big thanks to HORIZON Ottawa and the Public Service Alliance of Canada-National Capital Region (PSAC-NCR) for your unwavering support as well.

However, the fight isn’t over yet. Next week, the Ottawa City Council will vote on the bylaw, and ACORN is calling for everyone to join the Watch Party to make sure councillors vote YES. The message is clear: the community is watching, and we will not stop until renters are protected.

We’ve fought hard for this, and we can’t stop now. The pressure is on City Council, and we need to show up in full force to ensure this bylaw moves forward.

Make sure to wear your red ACORN t-shirts to send a strong message to city councillors that renters’ rights are non-negotiable.

Event details:

ACORN is extending a massive thank you to all the members and allies who spoke at today’s committee meeting and for their continued support.

Let’s continue the fight for housing justice and make our voices heard!

[62
70
post-16022","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","campaigns-housing-tenant-unions","featured_news-yes
["GET
