On Wednesday October 23rd, 2024, ACORN hosted a community forum on rent control, with 65 members turning out including Ward 8 City Councillor Courtney Walcott and NDP MLAs Janis Irwin, Joe Ceci, and Samir Kayande. We began with a historical overview of rent control and a detailed discussion debunking common myths surrounding it. Speakers highlighted how rent control protects tenants from unfair rent hikes without stifling housing development or harming small landlords.

Several ACORN members shared their stories of facing massive rent increases, underscoring the urgent need for stronger protections. One of the evening’s testimonies even came from a small landlord who is actively supporting rent control. She spoke about how having rent control and strong tenant protections is mutually beneficial for tenants and landlords and how she is reducing her tenants’ rent by $15 per month so that they can join ACORN.

The forum ended on an energetic note as attendees were moved into action. ACORN announced the next protest targeting a UCP MLA, and everyone was encouraged to call UCP cabinet ministers to demand rent control legislation. New members joined ACORN, and the evening concluded with a strong sense of unity and determination to continue the fight for tenant rights and rent control in Alberta.
