Over the last few months some Toronto ACORN members have won major improvements in their high-rise apartment building at 4500 Jane St. In a letter sent out to all tenants, the landlord lays out how, after meeting with ACORN in August, they are following through with their commitment to get up-to-date with all work orders in the building by next month.
In total the landlord states that they have invested $500,000 in repairs since they met with ACORN.
All of this was done in a collective effort by all members of the Jane and Finch chapter, but would not have been possible without the long term, persistent leadership shown by Maize Blanchard, the building captain for 4500 Jane St.
This is a small victory, and there is a long way to go to make healthy homes a reality for all tenants in Toronto, yet this victory clearly shows that when a group of determined people get together they can make a real difference in their neighbourhood.
