Part-Time Canvasser - ACORN Canada

Part-Time Canvasser

Posted June 8, 2022

Care about community issues and social justice? Enjoy talking to people? Looking to work outside this summer? Nova Scotia ACORN is looking for Canvassers / Community Outreach Workers to help with housing justice campaigning and fundraising in the HRM! No experience required and thorough training provided.

About us: Since 2004 ACORN staff organizers have been helping organize communities and secure important victories for low-to-moderate income communities at the local, provincial and national levels. Victories like Landlord Licensing, $10/month Internet for 400,000 low income families and seniors, winning repairs and stopping evictions for tenants across Nova Scotia, and many more!

The job: ACORN is a union in the community. Like any union our members pay membership dues so that they can have a sustainable, independent organization to fight for their interest. Part of everyone’s job at ACORN is to work to increase our membership and retain our independence. Your job as a canvasser will be primarily engaging community members in the organization by doing street outreach on our housing campaigns, and fundraising to help build the organization.

Room for advancement/long-term work in the organization is available and expected.

Part time wage is $16.66 per hour with a potential increase to $17.12 based on tenure and performance.

Ideal Candidates Are:

  • People who are able to be part of a team, but work independently in a grassroots setting
  • Willing to handle challenging and rewarding work to help our membership grow to be strong and active leaders
  • Must be willing to work field hours between 2PM and 8PM as we organize predominately when many people are at home (for part-time, we can be flexible on the days worked but not the hours).
  • Passionate about social justice and eager to participate in direct action on issues decided by ACORN’s current community leaders
