Members Occupy the LTB Again!

Posted on August 4, 2020

ACORN members occupied the Landlord & Tenant Board yet again across three cities – Hamilton, Ottawa and Toronto. Members are outraged as LTBs across the province begin issuing eviction orders and eviction hearings.

We are demanding an extension of moratorium on evictions and rent forgiveness for tenants at the risk of eviction. We are also demanding an urgent repeal of Bill 184 as it fast tracks evictions.

Here’s a brief account of actions in Hamilton, Ottawa and Toronto.

Hamilton: ACORN members did an epic 8-hour action in downtown Hamilton today! Starting at 8:00 AM, members met at Bay St S and King St W to gather before marching to the Landlord and Tenant Board. Members occupied the first floor of 119 King St W before holding a rally outside to demand No COVID Evictions! Going until 4PM, ACORN leaders Mike Wood, Raven Bridges, Elizabeth Ellis and Dayna Sparks led chants and speeches about what Bill 184 means for tenants and ACORN's demands in response to the lifting of the eviction ban. ACORN members are going back Thursday afternoon to continue the fight against the passing of Bill 184 and protections for tenants during the pandemic and beyond.

Ottawa: ACORN members took over the LTB to demand NO COVID evictions, rent forgiveness and the repeal of Bill 184. Members first met a few blocks away at the corner of Bank/Wellington where long time ACORN tenant leader and ex-Herongate renter, Mavis Finnamore, made a speech and Chair of the South Ottawa chapter, Marie Lourdes Garnier, led the crowd in chants. Members marched to the LTB with a 17 ft banner reading "NO COVID EVICTIONS" to make their message loud and clear!! We were able to make it to the 4th floor of 255 Albert where the LTB sits and disrupted any eviction hearings in process with chants that filled the whole floor! CBC/Radio Canada were with members the entire time catching the whole action on camera.

Toronto: Members were out in Scarborough demanding No COVID Evictions - first we met at Midland TTC and then marched to the LTB close by. The action was led by new member Nasar from Whitby and leaders Alejandra, Marva, and Loretta helped run chants and speeches. Before the action we got word that there would be some counter protesters joining us and we met them at the LTB. Members were loud with chants and kept it cool because at the end of the day we need to focus on the real target - Doug Ford and corporate landlords! During speeches - members wrote No COVID Evictions outside with chalk and handed out flyers to let people know don't sign repayment agreements and if they're getting evicted to call ACORN. There was press from CBC, OMNI, CP24, Scarborough Mirror, and some local independents. Overall members were happy and are already eager to do more!
