On Tuesday September 6, 2016, ACORN Canada members in Ottawa, Toronto, and Vancouver organized a coordinated Day of Action to demand that major Canadian financial institutions and investment companies stop investing and directing investment into high interest, predatory companies like easyfinancial and easyhome; and end banking practices that generate profits off of Canada’s lowest-income families.

ACORN members demand that these companies divest in predatory lenders! Some major financial institutions and investment funds who are institutional investors, directing funds to goeasy (easyfinancial) include: RBC Global Asset Management, National Bank, PH&N Canadian Equity and more. (Source)

In Toronto, a dozen lively ACORN members took action at the head offices of  IA Clarington. An advance team led by Donna Borden delivered a letter to the senior staff while other members handed out over 500 flyers and petitioned outside.

24 ACORN members in Ottawa rallied outside National Bank and delivered a letter demanding that they divest shares from easyhome financial. Vanier Chair, and National Board member, Gisele Bouvier led the event with Stephanie Graham, co-chair of Vanier, and spoke to the branch manager who promised to fax the document to president.

In Vancouver, ACORN members were able to speak to Chris Dotson, VP of Market & Communications at PH&N Investment Services, who took the letter and enthusiastically said he would pass along this information and get back to us. Members also handed out flyers outside.

After the actions, letters were mailed to other major shareholders in easyfinancial and easyhome. ACORN members will keep fighting to demand that Canadian financial institutions and investment companies stop investing, or directing investor to invest, in fringe financial institutions that exploit low-income Canadians.

The actions received press coverage from 1310 News, CFRA, Le Droit, and Fairchild News.
