The shocking and terrifying incident this weekend at the TCH Building at Markham Rd and Eglinton Ave in Scarborough shows all Torontonians why ACORN is fighting for healthy homes. As Kelly Lalande points out in this CBC news clip we should expect more disasters like this as buildings age and both public housing and private housing are not kept up to basic building codes.
Most importantly no one was hurt. But it does make us wonder how long it will be before someone does die, and if only then the government's funding priorities will change, reforming unacceptable building code enforcements and the overall disregard for our health and safety.
Toronto ACORN found Housing Minister Ted McMeekin’s statement to Global News on this incident to be flippant and dismissive. We urge the minister to meet with ACORN as soon as soon as possible to discuss real solutions to the housing crisis, and not just talk about making plans we doubt he will bother to live up to.
