National Day of Action for Affordable Housing
In 1993, the federal government terminated all new funding for social housing, effectively halting the development of new affordable housing units. We are now facing the consequences of this choice where unaffordable rents are a cornerstone of the Canadian marketplace. This is unacceptable.
According to Statistics Canada, up to 61% of low-income renters are struggling with housing affordability, while 57% of people with disabilities report difficulty meeting daily expenses.
Canada's social and non-market housing makes up just 3.5% of the total housing stock—far below countries like Austria, Denmark, and the Netherlands, where it exceeds 20%, and Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, and the UK, where it ranges between 10-19%. Government has abandoned housing and left it to the private-market for developers to profit.
On March 19th join ACORN at events across Canada to demand:
- National Rent Control
- Build and invest in social & non-market housing
- A ban on Fixed-Term leases as a loophole for rent control.
