Wynne’s Liberals announced their 2018 Budget yesterday, presenting some promising investments for low-income Canadians, although ACORN members note that there is still a long way to go.
Budget 2018 shows that the Federal Government is taking small steps to support low and moderate income Canadians, but we need more from Morneau. We still have a long way to go.
On Thursday, February 1, several ACORN members attended the BC Poverty Reduction Strategy community meeting in Surrey. ACORN leader Tabitha Naismith attended the meeting and spoke to the Surrey Now-Leader about the housing crisis.
On Tuesday, members of ACORN’s Employment Insurance (EI) Action Group had an informative and animated meeting with EI Commissioner, Pierre Laliberté, in Toronto. The room was packed as members and leaders presented a number of well-thought-out recommendations to address issues with EI and ensure that the process of applying for, and accessing, EI is made fairer and more accessible to low and moderate income earners.
While ACORN and our allies were able to achieve successes for low-to-moderate income people - some announced in today’s budget and some last week on rent control - today’s budget makes it clear that we need to continue to pressure the Provincial government to make Ontario an affordable place for regular people to live.
