April 1: Choose Food over Rent, Call on the Government for a Rent Break

Statement by Marva Burnett, the National President of ACORN Canada

If tenants are choosing between necessities like food and rent, they should choose food over rent!

In the short term - to get past April 1 and May 1 -  the government needs to create a pot of money to which landlords can apply to when tenants can't afford their rent.  Millions of people have lost their income due to COVID-19 and no government support will be in peoples' hands by April 1.  There is a lag and a shortage of money needed to pay for basic needs for many people. If tenants are choosing between necessities like food and rent, they should choose food not rent!

Even Doug Ford Agrees : "If you can't put food on your table and you're in a crisis – I want to reinforce this – put food on your table before paying your rent"
