Ottawa ACORN Members: “We can’t rent for $479!”

On Friday, June 26 2015, close to 30 members of Ottawa ACORN gathered outside the Ministry of Community and Social Services at 351 Preston Street.

On Friday, June 26 2015, close to 30 members of Ottawa ACORN gathered outside the Ministry of Community and Social Services at 351 Preston Street. The action was held as part of ACORN’s campaign to raise the housing allowance for ODSP and OW recipients by 152 to 268%. The action was led by members Amber Slegtenhorst, Blaine Cameron and Jake Dunlop. Slegtenhorst and Cameron offered testimony about life on ODSP and OW, as did fellow members Kathy Erb, Cordelia Daniels, Peggy Chevers-Wilson, Ray Noyes, Diane Rochon and Robbie McCallan. Members were joined by representatives from ally organizations OPSEU and the Canadian Labour Congress. ACORN members are committed to holding actions outside the Ministry on the last Friday of each month, as symbolic of ODSP and OW cheque day, until the housing allowance is increased.
Vendredi le 26 juin 2015, environ 30 membres d’Ottawa ACORN sont assemblés devant le ministère des services sociaux et communautaires à 351 Preston. La manifestation faisait partie de la campagne d’ACORN pour demander une augmentation de l’allocation de logement par 152 à 268% pour ceux et celles qui reçoivent le POSPH et Ontario au travail. La manifestation était dirigé par membres Amber Slegtenhorst, Blaine Cameron et Jake Dunlop. Slegtenhorst et Cameron ont parlé au sujet de la vie des bénéficiaires de l’aide sociale. Membres Kathy Erb, Cordelia Daniels, Peggy Chevers-Wilson, Ray Noyes, Diane Rochon et Robbie McCallan ont aussi parlé. Des représentants des organismes alliés avec ACORN, le SEFPO et le Congrès du travail du Canada, étaient aussi présents. Les membres d’ACORN sont dediés a manifester le dernier vendredi de chaque mois, pour symboliser le jour de paiement de POSPH et Ontario au travail, jusqu’à la fois que l’allocation de logement soit augmenté.
